Job description

A special school in Leeds are seeking an experienced teacher to join their team this September.

We are seeking a Special Needs Teacher who can promote a positive learning environment where character building and sensory, play based, and child centred learning make up the majority of the curriculum.

The school caters for 108 pupils aged 3-19 with a range of complex Special Educational Needs including Autistic Spectrum Conditions; Severe Learning Difficulties; Speech, Language and Communication Needs; Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. 90% of pupils are non or preverbal.

The successful applicant must have previous experience of planning and delivering a tailored curriculum for pupils with additional learning needs. You will be confident in designing and implementing a personalised curriculum for pupils at P scale Levels, as well as those working at National Curriculum levels across all Key Stages. You will have a working knowledge of developing Education, Health and Care Plans and of working to specific goals for individual pupils.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing a personalised curriculum and assessment system for pupils with complex Special Educational Needs
  • Developing good quality EHCPs – designing a curriculum that meets pupils’ holistic needs
  • Working as part of the ‘team around the child’ with parents/carers, health and social care professionals
  • Planning lessons and prepare teaching materials – including the use of specialist, inclusive technology or communication aids including PECS, Boardmaker, BIGMacks, and/or Social Stories
  • Helping pupils to develop self-confidence, independence, and skills for life
  • Attending meetings, statutory reviews, and training workshops
  • Organising outings, school social activities and sporting events

You may also have experience teaching using the SCERTS model or TEACCH approach, with a sound understanding of meeting the needs of learners on the Autism Spectrum.

The school is located in the Roundhay area of Leeds and is easily accessible by both car and public transport – with a bus stop located outside the school.

You will need to complete all necessary vetting checks including proof of identity, a DBS on the Update Service and producing two recent references. Working hours are 08:00-16:00 but may vary given the level of responsibility you will have.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
