Pontypool - Teaching Assistant - Autism

Secondary school in Pontypool require 2 x teaching Assistants to start work in September. Within the schools Asc unit, the Special Educational Needs co-ordinator is looking for a strong willing, passionate TA to aid with 2 Autistic children. One of the students has moderate Autism with behavioural needs, where the second student has high functioning Autism and will need assistance in both the separate unit and mainstream lessons. This assignment is due to last the academic year.

You will at times be needed to work 1 to 1 with their students but can also be asked to aid with bigger groups 3/4 pupils and there is a high ratio of LSA support. ASC schools have pupils with complex needs, there may be pupils with degenerative illnesses, those who are completely non-verbal and communicate using basic signing tools like Makaton or through a series of lights and clickers. There may be pupils at the high end of the autism spectrum or with Cerebral Palsy.

Your duties could include:

• help with pupils' school work under the supervision of an SEN teacher

• Aid pupils increase their confidence, self-esteem and independence

• You will be responsible for promoting inclusion, working according to IEP’s and advancing learning, allowing the children you will be working with to make positive progress by removing barriers to learning.

The successful candidate should:

• Have knowledge/interest and experience working with Autism/ASD, ADHD,

• Be able to use positive reinforcement when supporting behaviour difficulties - working with pupils with ADHD this would be an advantage

• Patient and positive role model for children
