How Does the Early Career Framework Prepare You For Your Teaching Career?
The first years of a teacher's career are crucial for their professional development. These years allow teachers to establish positive habits and develop the teaching strategies that will see them through the rest of their careers. The early career framework (ECF) was introduced in 2019 to replace the previous NQT induction period. It rehauls schools’ professional development cultures by giving new teachers a two-year professional development programme with a plethora of resources and support.
Currently, 33% of teachers leave the profession within five years of joining it. The early career framework is designed to improve retention by ensuring that teachers are better prepared to flourish in their roles.
In this article, we take a look at how the early career framework can help you hit the ground running as an Early Career Teacher.
Provides knowledge and skills
The main objective of the Early Career Framework is to provide early career teachers with the tools necessary to succeed in their roles. Teachers need to be given a working knowledge of the classroom to conduct effective lessons and enrich the lives of their young students.
The early career framework has a range of modules with content that provides teachers with evidence-informed ideas that are important for classroom practice. As well as addressing curriculum knowledge, the framework also tackles the typical challenges that educators will face in their working lives. This early exposure to common school challenges will give teachers the right skills to face them head-on when they inevitably run into them in real life.
As well as exploring concepts such as curriculum structure and design, participants will also develop skills in areas such as:
-
Scaffolding
-
Metacognition
-
Working memory
-
Practice, challenge and success
-
Classroom talk
Additional time for development
One of the most prevalent problems that early career teachers confront is balancing a demanding workload with their professional growth. Early career framework reforms have tried to address this issue, and early career teachers will receive a 10% professional development remission in their first year of teaching. This is on top of the 10% remission that all teachers are entitled to for preparation, planning, and marking time.
Early career teachers also receive a 5% remission in their second year of teaching, allowing them to create techniques for developing sustainable working practices as they move through their careers.
A mentor to offer guidance
A mentor plays the most important role in supporting a new teacher’s development and steering them in the right direction in their career. In the early career framework, the nominated mentor will meet with their early career teacher in the first week of term to review ways of working and identify areas for improvement. Mentoring is an excellent technique to prepare a teacher for a long and fruitful career since it allows them to identify and correct any flaws early on.
Mentors on the ECF are expected to be dynamic, lead new teachers through specific learning pathways and give clear work-on points that help make tangible improvements to their practice. As the ECT progresses through their career, they can continue to refer to their mentor for any advice, providing another layer of support that could be the difference between success and failure.
Register with the Early Career Framework
The ECF arrives at a time when teacher retention has been a problem for a number of years. This fully-funded programme offers ECTs the close assistance and growth they require at a critical juncture in their careers. This is our best opportunity at increasing retention and ensuring that our new teacher colleagues have the best chance at a long and prosperous career.
Schools can reap major rewards from hiring early career teachers with fresh perspectives. Teaching Personnel's ECT Pool is full of eager young educators ready to bring their talents to your school.
