Five tips for improving students' performance in maths lessons

Date posted : 28 March 2022

Mathematics is a crucial subject, without which we would be unable to conceive of foundational concepts like logic and reasoning. In school, it’s also a prerequisite for understanding the contents of other subjects, such as science, social studies, and even music and art!

Since maths has such a wide impact, it needs to be taught diligently and thoroughly. In this guide, we’ll share 5 valuable maths lesson tips that will help you improve your pupils’ performance in maths lessons and encourage them to truly embrace and enjoy the subject.

1. Create dynamic lesson plans

Every student learns differently and it’s important that teachers keep that in mind when planning lessons. To accommodate individual learning, mathematics teachers can create dynamic maths lesson plans and implement inclusive practices that resonate with each pupil, giving the entire class the chance to achieve their learning objectives.

For example, after discussing a formula, you might ask the class to think up some examples of how it might be applied in everyday life. This interactive style of teaching encourages critical thinking and helps pupils understand how mathematical principles relate to other subjects. Placing maths in its wider context should intrigue learners and help them grasp concepts on a familiar and comfortable level.

You should use their feedback to develop your technique and make your maths lessons even more fun and enriching.

2. Build confidence

Confidence is an important component of learning. When we work to build self-confidence in our students, we must inspire them to believe in their abilities. Gaining confidence makes students more resilient, teaching them to take setbacks in their stride and try again.

Students who lack confidence will often focus solely on the negative aspects of their learning ability. Make it a point to praise and acknowledge students when they achieve success, and provide constructive criticism and support if they are struggling with a task. As a maths teacher, you can build confidence in your classroom by creating a space where your students feel comfortable making mistakes.

3. Encourage questioning and make space for curiosity

Research shows that asking questions helps a person to learn, understand, and remember the content. To improve your students’ performance, you too can create a class environment that welcomes and encourages questions and curiosity.

Praising students by explaining how their explorations and questions are contributing to their own learning helps them feel valued for their motivation, regardless of the grade they achieve.

The more confident your students are, the more likely they will feel at ease to ask questions.

4. Get your students on the move

One easy way to make maths a favourite subject amongst students is to get them on the move!

Studies have found that encouraging movement while learning can deliver significant cognitive and academic benefits, especially in young children. This is because the movement makes learning activities more interesting, meaningful, and fun.

Movement in maths lessons can be as simple as walking students around the school and encouraging them to note down any shapes that they can identify. If your students need a bit more of a challenge, a game of sticky darts can build mental maths skills.

Combine this technique with verbal and visual teaching methods to help your students encode what they’ve learned into their long-term memories.

5. Share positive attitudes about maths

Encourage your students’ family, friends, and other teachers to talk positively about mathematics to nourish a positive attitude towards the subject.

Children who struggle with maths may sometimes start to find it futile. As a maths teacher, you can improve your students’ performance in maths lessons by disproving such misconceptions. Elaborate on the wonder of maths, emphasise how it’s used in everyday life, and make it a “fun” adventure instead of sticking only to daunting formulas.
