A special needs school in Highams Park are currently seeking a teaching assistant to support in a complex needs class. The school cater to students with sensory impairments as well as a small number of autistic students. They have recently renovated their facilities to improve upon the learning environment of the pupils and this also includes new state of the art equipment.

The specialist school catering to students with sensory impairments, provide PECS and Makaton training for teaching assistants to support students with their communication needs. The training is delivered on site , so as long as you have previous experience supporting special needs and passionate to work in special educational needs then we want to hear from you ! As a teaching assistant here you will need to be able to support in both 1:1 intervention sessions as well as engage pupils to participate in group activities. Dependant upon performance there will also the opportunity to secure a permanent contract!

Your role:

There are a maximum of 6 pupils in this classroom with sensory impairments, each teaching assistant is assigned 2 pupils to support within the class and ensure they are following the class plan and pupils aims of their educational healthcare plan. You will need to encourage students to take part and also ensure you are able to use PECS and Makaton techniques effectively to communicate with students. Lots of interaction with pupils and a positive attitude is essential !

Requirements:

  • SEN experience supporting sensory students/autism is required
  • Confident to deliver 1:1 support
  • Basic understanding of PECS and Makaton techniques
  • Psychology/Education/Sociology degree
  • Volunteer work in either a youth or school setting
  • Able to commit to school based hours of 8.30am-3.30pm during term time
  • Must be available for an immediate start

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.
