A special school in Leeds are looking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant to work within a primary class on a full time basis. This is a fixed term contract covering a secondment for a period of 12 months.

The school is based in the Oakwood area of Leeds (LS8), and has good public transport links as well as being easily accessible by car. Catering for 150 pupils aged 2-19 with a range of Special Educational Needs, the school are seeking an individual to work within a primary class with Key Stage 2 pupils with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). The ideal applicant will have experience using Makaton, PECS and/or Intensive Interaction within a specialist setting. The school has a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Physiotherapists; as part of your role you may be required to implement specific programmes as advised by these key staff members where appropriate.

Working under the direction of a Special Needs Teacher, you will be required to support pupils to understand instructions in respect of local and national learning strategies across all subjects, including literacy, numeracy and ICT. You may also be asked to provide clerical/administrative support - photocopying, typing, filing, collecting money etc.

In addition to supporting access to the curriculum, as a Learning Support Assistant you will also be required to supervise and engage with pupils during break and lunchtime periods. Staff members are encouraged to eat with pupils in the school canteen; modelling positive behaviours, good manners and assisting pupils who require feeding or support with cutting, and offer free school meals in return.

To apply for this role, you must have previous experience supporting young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and be available on a full time basis (5 days a week during term time).

All applicants will require the appropriate qualification and training for this role. For teacher roles, we require a formally recognised teaching qualification. For Support staff our minimum requirement is GCSE English & Maths (A-C) or equivalent.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.
