SEN Teaching Assistant required for special school in Huddersfield.
A full time Teaching Assistant post has become available within a specialist school setting in Huddersfield. The setting is a Specialist ‘Physical and Sensory’ Complex Needs School. It is a mixed, day Foundation School for pupils from 3 to 19 years of age, with physical and / or sensory needs. Many pupils also have complex medical and learning needs.
The school are looking to appoint a full time Teaching Assistant from September 2020, to support with pupil transition in the new academic year. A large number of pupils will have spent a significant time without accessing formal education, so it will be your responsibility to successfully reintegrate pupils back into school, by following a structured routine and delivering targeted interventions.
All pupils follow a curriculum including aspects of the National Curriculum at a level personalised to meet their needs and are encouraged to develop an enquiring and active interest in their studies. Where possible, the curriculum is parallel to that of mainstream schools, with attention given to the additional and individual curriculum to develop personalised learning.
As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, your duties will include:
- Encouraging pupils to participate in learning as directed by the class teacher
- Creating an inclusive culture both across school and within the local community
- Providing high quality teaching support for all learners, and supporting the provision of a rich educational environment in which collaborative learning can take place
- Adapting resources to ensure access to learning for all children
- Implementing specific programmes as instructed which may include: Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Sensory Support
- Providing assistance to key pupils with personal care, or administering medication
- Providing break and lunch time supervision which may include support with feeding
We are seeking an individual who is passionate about seeking a long term career within Special Needs Education. You will ideally have personal or professional experience providing support for individuals with additional needs, or have worked as a Care Assistant or Support Worker within a residential or health care setting.
Additional training or experience in the following would be an advantage:
- Picture Exchange Communication systems
- BSL or Makaton
- Communication Devices including BIG-Macks, Tellus, Eyegaze
- Sensory Integration
- Intensive Interaction
- MOON/Braille

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
