BSL Teaching Assistant required for Burnley Primary School

I am currently working with a large Primary School in the Burnley area who utilise British Sign Language to support the needs of their students who are deaf or hearing impaired. The school are seeking a support/teaching assistants experienced in British Sign Language. As a BSL Teaching Assistant you will support deaf students in their Education by interpreting spoken English into British Sign Language (BSL) and adapt learning materials. The school have 2 children already in school who require BSL support, with 3 more students starting in September within their new Reception intake. The school has a full time BSL support assistant who has just handed in their 4 weeks notice period, hence the reason for the school to quickly find someone who can provide this 'specialist' support. The role will start from September 2019 and run on a supply basis for 16 weeks, with the school then having the option to take the successful candidate onto a school contract. The role would be 32.5 hours across the week, with the starting time being 8:30 in order to complete a 'handover' with the children's parents, with the same process at the end of the school day.

Some of the role responsibilities would include:

- Be able to support the needs of the BSL learners

- Help them communicate with others in class

- Support them by lipspeaking and notetaking

- Interpret between spoken English and BSL

- Be creative in adapting learning materials to match learners' interests

- Use a range of ways to help them grasp what is required in class

- Help students to produce written work

- Support learners in talking about their learning needs with teachers

- Build relationships with learners, their families, and other professionals

- Think of ways for learners to become more independent

- Support the school in improving the environment for hearing aids and lipreading

If you have excellent communication skills and would like to further develop an understanding of deaf culture, this could be the job for you.

To apply for this role you will need a experience or a Certificate in BSL. You will also need experience of working with children or adults with deafness or hearing loss.​
