I'm currently recruiting Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Learning Support staff to work across specialist SEND settings throughout East Sussex.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from educators around Hastings, Battle, Eastbourne, Hailsham, Crowborough, Seaford, Newhaven and surrounding areas as schools begin the new academic year.

The settings I support vary considerably.

Some work primarily with autism and communication needs. Others support young people with SEMH and behaviour that can challenge. Some pupils have complex learning profiles and need considerably more individualised support than they'd receive within a mainstream environment.

Because of that, there isn't one particular "type" of person I'm looking for.

What matters is finding the right educator for the right setting.

Teachers

I'm interested in hearing from both experienced SEND Teachers and mainstream teachers who are considering moving into specialist education.

Depending on the provision, opportunities may be suitable for teachers from either primary or secondary backgrounds.

SEND teaching often requires creativity and flexibility. Progress isn't always measured purely through academic outcomes, and successful teachers understand the importance of relationships, regulation, communication and consistency alongside curriculum delivery.

Teaching positions will vary depending on the setting, with pay to scale where applicable.

Teaching Assistants & support staff

For support positions, previous SEND experience is useful but isn't always essential.

I've seen people transition successfully into SEND from:

• Mainstream education
• Youth work
• Care and support work
• Sports coaching
• Mentoring
• Psychology
• Social care
• Other child-facing backgrounds

The qualities I'm looking for are patience, consistency, resilience, empathy and the ability to remain calm when situations become difficult.

You also need to genuinely enjoy working with young people. SEND isn't an area I'd recommend somebody moves into simply because they want "any job in a school".

A little about me

Before becoming a Recruitment Consultant, I spent around six years working within SEND education myself as a Specialist Teaching Assistant and ELSA.

That experience is a big part of how I approach recruitment now.

I understand that the relationship between an educator and a setting matters enormously, particularly within SEND, and I'll always try to understand your experience and what environment you're likely to thrive in before discussing opportunities with you.

Some settings can be difficult to reach using public transport, so being a driver can open up more opportunities, although it isn't essential for every role.

Vetting & safeguarding

Before starting work, you'll need to complete our registration and safeguarding process, including suitable references and an enhanced DBS.

If you don't currently hold an appropriate DBS, you'll need to apply for one through us at your own cost and join the DBS Update Service. We'll support you throughout that process.
