A secondary school in Bradford are seeking a full time Teaching Assistant to provide support for pupils with Visual Impairments this term. The successful applicant will work within an enhanced provision, catering for pupils aged 11-18 with Visual Impairments.
You will be required to support the effective inclusion of children and young people who have visual impairment. The person appointed will work as part of a team under the guidance of a teacher of the visually impaired.
A large part of the role will be to prepare resources to support students, including using a Braille to translate documents using a Brailler, or ensuring specialist equipment is available during lessons to enable students to fully participate and engage with learning activities. Many pupils access mainstream lessons, whilst there are some lessons which are led by specialist teachers for the Visually Impaired.
You will also be required to:
- Contribute to planning, recording and implementation of individualised programmes of work
- Work with mainstream teachers and Teacher(s) of the Visually Impaired in lesson planning, evaluating, and modifying lesson/work plans as appropriate
- Monitor and evaluate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement, providing objective and accurate feedback and reports as required. Also, to contribute to and be involved in review meetings as appropriate
- Support the learning process of the child both on a one-to-one basis and working with a small group encouraging pupils to interact and work co-operatively engaging in the learning process
- Prepare support materials and assist with classroom activities
- Help pupils access learning activities through specialist support. This may include for example, ensuring that adapted and/or enlarged materials are in place or note-taking for pupils. Specialist Teaching Assistants will employ a range of other strategies to ensure full access for visually impaired pupils to the National Curriculum and to facilitate their participation in general classroom activities
- Provide access to the specialist curriculum which may include Braille, mobility training, specialist ICT, touch typing and independent living skills
- Facilitate the development of social skills encouraging and support extra-curricular activities and promoting friendships
Teaching Assistants are required to have a basic understanding of Braille or be prepared to access training to develop the knowledge and skills to be able to effectively support pupils with Visual Impairments.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
