Specialist secondary SEN and SEMH schools in Farnham and the surrounding areas are seeking dedicated Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) for January start dates. These settings support pupils with autism, learning difficulties, communication needs, sensory differences, and—within SEMH schools—young people who present with emotional and behavioural challenges. Schools are looking for adaptable, resilient, and compassionate LSAs who can provide high-quality support and help create positive, inclusive learning environments.

About the Pupils and Their Needs

Depending on the setting, you may be supporting pupils who have:

In SEN specialist schools:

  • Autism spectrum conditions with communication, social interaction, or sensory needs

  • Moderate or severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)

  • Cognitive delays impacting memory, processing, and problem-solving

  • Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)

  • High levels of anxiety linked to routine changes or transitions

  • Sensory processing differences that may lead to overload or withdrawal

In SEMH secondary settings:

  • Emotional and behavioural difficulties

  • High anxiety, low self-esteem, or trauma-related needs

  • Dysregulation and challenging behaviour requiring calm, consistent, relational support

  • Barriers to learning linked to past negative school experiences

Across all settings, pupils benefit from structured routines, adapted approaches, and strong, trusting relationships with adults.

Role Responsibilities

As a Secondary SEN/SEMH Learning Support Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to help pupils access learning

  • Assist teachers with delivering differentiated activities and personalised interventions

  • Use structured approaches such as TEACCH, visual supports, and communication systems

  • Support emotional regulation and encourage positive behaviour using trauma-informed strategies (in SEMH settings)

  • Help implement EHCP targets, behaviour plans, and individual support strategies

  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and behaviour mentors

  • Promote independence, confidence, and engagement in the classroom

  • Contribute to creating predictable, inclusive learning environments

Key Details

  • January start roles available across multiple specialist secondary schools

  • Full-time positions available; part-time considered in some settings

  • Term-time only

  • Long-term roles with potential permanent opportunities

  • Excellent CPD offered, including autism training, SEMH strategies, and behaviour support

  • Location: Farnham and surrounding areas

  • Opportunities to work across a range of subjects and year groups

Who Should Apply

This role is ideal for:

  • Experienced LSAs or SEN support staff

  • Candidates with backgrounds supporting autism, MLD/SLD, complex needs, or SEMH

  • Graduates or career changers seeking experience in specialist education

  • Individuals confident managing challenging behaviour in a relational, restorative way

  • People who are patient, resilient, and passionate about inclusive education

  • Those exploring teaching or therapy careers in the future

Requirements

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people (in school, care, or community settings)

  • Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)

  • Right to work in the UK

To apply, please submit your CV. Suitable candidates will be contacted to discuss the range of January vacancies across SEN and SEMH secondary schools in the Farnham area.
