SEMH Teaching Assistant

We are seeking an SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a seconady school based in Preston. The school supports students who display signs of very challenging behaviour. This school is a specialist setting that prioritises the emotional and social well-being of every child, helping them build skills, resilience, and confidence to achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibiities: 

  • Provide 1:1 and group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them access learning in a supportive and safe environment.
  • Work closely with the class teachers to develop individualised strategies that promote positive behaviour and academic progress.
  • Manage and de-escalate challenging situations, using therapeutic approaches to support students through emotional and behavioural difficulties.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students, helping them develop social skills, self-regulation, and resilience.

About you:

  • You must have experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain calm, compassionate, and positive in high-pressure situations.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to work, with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team but also independently when needed.
