SEMH Teaching Assistant 

Are you a resilient and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant looking for a rewarding opportunity within a specialist, therapeutic education setting? Teaching Personnel is working in partnership with an independent SEND provision supporting young people aged 11–18 with social, emotional and mental health needs, offering a flexible and highly personalised approach to learning.

Role: SEMH Teaching Assistant (Temp to Perm)
Location: Preston, Lancashire (independent SEND provision)
Contract: Temporary with strong potential to become permanent
Start Date: Immediate / As agreed
Hours: Full-time (term-time)

About the Role:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support learners who require emotional, behavioural and pastoral support to engage positively with education. You will play a key role in helping students regulate emotions, build confidence and access learning in a calm, structured and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH needs

  • Support the implementation of behaviour and emotional regulation plans

  • Assist teachers in delivering personalised and engaging learning activities

  • Build positive, trusting relationships that promote engagement and stability

  • Support students during transitions and unstructured times

  • Help maintain a safe, consistent and nurturing learning environment

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour

  • A calm, patient and resilient approach to behaviour management

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Relevant experience in education, youth work, care or mental health support (desirable)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
