For our Southampton based School, we are seeking to find a suitable Behaviour Support Worker. As a Behaviour Support Worker, you will work to support students in a specialist unit within the school to achieve their academic potential with a therapeutic approach. Students who are allocated a place in this dedicated provision may have a range of behavioural needs from the result of trauma, social, emotional and mental health challenges. Students follow a personalised alternative curriculum to enable them to access a good education.

We will want the person appointed to build positive relationships with pupils, working sometimes individually and sometimes in small groups, many of them will be very vulnerable and have emotional and/or challenging behavioural difficulties. The role is varied and part of the role will include administration support and liaising effectively with staff, parents and external agencies. This is an exciting opportunity and we are seeking to appoint an individual who is passionate about making a difference to the lives of the children in his/her care.

As a Behaviour Support worker, you will be mostly (although not limited too) be responsible for:

  • Supporting and implementing behaviour intervention specific to issues raised by pastoral staff and/or subject teachers with particular focus on students with emotional or mental health issues
  • To support the holistic progress of individuals and small groups by facilitating emotional and behavioural support using a variety of intervention strategies
  • To deliver programmes of specific intervention e.g. mental and emotional health, self-esteem, anger-management, self-awareness etc. to groups and individuals.
  • To work with students to improve punctuality, levels of attendance and to ease a return to school
  • following prolonged absence.
  • To assist with re-integrating and engaging students back into mainstream lessons
  • To work under the guidance of the SENCO, teaching and senior staff to implement agreed interventions and programmes of work

The successful candidate will be required to apply for a disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service which will be made before the appointment is confirmed. In addition, all applicants must provide two references, including one from a present or most recent employer. References will not be accepted from relatives or people writing solely in the capacity of friends and references will be requested before interview. In addition to candidates’ ability to perform the duties of the post, the interview will also explore issues relating to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
