Black History Month: Classroom Resources and Ideas for Schools

Date posted : 07 October 2026

October marks Black History Month in the UK, giving schools an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, contributions and experiences of Black communities while encouraging meaningful conversations about diversity, representation and inclusion.

Whether you're planning a dedicated lesson, an assembly or classroom activities, there are plenty of ways to engage pupils and broaden their understanding of Black history and culture.

Classroom Ideas for Black History Month

Explore Black British History

Black History Month is a great opportunity to shine a light on Black British figures and events that may not always be covered in depth within the curriculum.

Activities could include:

  • Researching the Windrush Generation and its impact on modern Britain
  • Creating timelines of key moments in Black British history
  • Investigating influential Black figures in politics, science, sport and the arts

Spotlight Inspirational Figures

Ask pupils to research a Black individual who has made a significant contribution to society and present their findings through posters, presentations or fact files.

Figures could include:

  • Mary Seacole
  • Walter Tull
  • Baroness Doreen Lawrence
  • Sir Lewis Hamilton
  • Benjamin Zephaniah

Bring Diverse Voices into Reading

Use age-appropriate texts, poems and stories by Black authors to explore different perspectives and experiences.

Discussion questions could include:

  • Why is representation important?
  • What can we learn from different lived experiences?
  • How do stories help us understand the world around us?

Creating a More Inclusive Classroom

Black History Month is also a chance to reflect on how diversity is represented throughout the school year.

Small changes can make a big difference, including:

  • Using classroom resources that reflect diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Highlighting achievements from a wide range of role models
  • Challenging stereotypes and discriminatory language
  • Encouraging respectful discussion and curiosity
  • Ensuring displays and reading materials represent modern Britain

Useful Resources for Schools

If you're looking for ready-made lesson plans and activities, these organisations offer a range of resources for educators:

Looking Beyond October

While Black History Month provides an important opportunity for learning and reflection, many schools are increasingly embedding diverse voices and perspectives throughout the curriculum all year round.

By celebrating achievements, exploring different experiences and ensuring pupils encounter a wide range of role models, educators can help create classrooms where every learner feels represented, valued and inspired.
