I recruit specifically across SEND and specialist education in East Sussex, working with schools across Hastings, Battle, Eastbourne, Hailsham, Seaford, Newhaven, Lewes and the surrounding areas.

At the moment, I’m looking to speak with more people who either already have experience within SEND and SEMH, or have the sort of background and transferable skills that could make specialist education a good next step.

There isn’t one particular vacancy behind this advert.

I work with different schools, supporting different needs and age groups, so I’d rather start by finding out what you’re good at and what you actually want to do.

What Does a Good SEND Educator Look Like?

There isn’t really one answer.

Having spent several years working in SEND myself before moving into recruitment, I worked alongside people with completely different personalities and backgrounds who were all brilliant at what they did.

There were, however, a few things they generally had in common.

They were dependable. They didn’t take difficult behaviour personally. They knew when to push and when to give a pupil space. They could have a laugh with young people while still maintaining clear boundaries. And they understood that building trust can take time.

That’s the sort of person my schools are looking for.

What If You Haven’t Worked in SEND Before?

Don’t automatically rule yourself out.

Some roles require previous specialist experience, but others don’t.

Schools can be interested in people coming from:

• Mainstream schools
• Care and support work
• Youth work
• Sports coaching
• Mentoring
• Tutoring
• Other roles involving children and young people

If you apply, I’ll look properly at what you’ve done and be straightforward about whether I think I have something suitable.

Finding the Right School Matters

SEND schools can differ enormously.

One person might thrive in an SEMH setting but struggle somewhere else. Someone else might be brilliant supporting pupils with communication needs or working 1:1.

So I don’t want to just fire your CV out to every school I work with.

I’ll get to know your experience, preferences, location and what you want from your next role, and we can work from there.

• Qualified teaching roles paid to scale where applicable
• Flexible, long-term and ongoing positions
• CPD and training available

You’ll need an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service. If you don’t currently have one, you’ll need to apply through us and join the Update Service. I’ll support you through that process, although the cost is covered by the applicant.

We’ll also need a full employment and education history, alongside references covering 24 months of employment in total where possible, as part of our safeguarding checks.
