There isn't one type of person who makes a good SEND educator.

I've worked with brilliant people from teaching backgrounds, care, coaching, youth work and mainstream schools. Some have years of SEND experience behind them; others have discovered specialist education much later in their careers.

What tends to matter is how you work with young people.

Can you stay calm when a situation becomes difficult? Can you build a relationship without expecting trust immediately? Can you be consistent with boundaries while still being approachable? And can you accept that sometimes a small step forward is actually a very big achievement?

If so, I'd be interested in speaking with you.

I'm currently recruiting for a range of roles within SEND and SEMH schools across East Sussex, including Hastings, Battle, Eastbourne, Hailsham, Seaford, Newhaven, Lewes and surrounding areas.

I work with both primary and secondary specialist settings, and the schools themselves can be very different.

That's why I don't believe in simply sending your CV everywhere and seeing what sticks.

Already Experienced in SEND?

Great. Tell me what you've enjoyed, what you haven't and what you're looking for next.

Perhaps you prefer SEMH. Maybe you're strongest working 1:1. You might want to move from support into teaching, or simply find a school with a different approach.

Those things matter when deciding where to put you forward.

Never Worked in SEND Before?

That doesn't automatically rule you out.

Some schools are open to people with relevant transferable experience, particularly from:

• Mainstream education
• Care
• Youth work
• Sports coaching
• Mentoring
• Other roles supporting children and young people

I'll be straightforward with you about whether your experience is suitable for the opportunities I have.

Having spent several years working directly within SEND education before moving into recruitment, I also understand that specialist education isn't for everybody. It can be demanding.

But for the right person, it's an incredibly interesting and rewarding area of education to work in.

You'll need an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service. If you don't currently hold one, you'll need to apply through us and join the Update Service. I'll support you with this, although the cost is covered by the applicant.

As part of our safeguarding process, we'll also require a full employment and education history alongside references covering 24 months of employment in total where possible.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
