A Harrogate primary school has contacted Teaching Personnel in search of an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to support an autistic child in Year 3. This role would be to start as soon as possible (ideally before the Easter holidays) and would be guaranteed until the end of term in July. The school…
The school is a very pleasant 2 form entry primary school in HG1, which is easily accessible by car and public transport. They were rated as GOOD by Ofsted at their last inspection in 2016 and consistently maintained this for many years. The behaviour at the school is on the whole very good, and the staff are a solid team who would be very welcoming to new starters. They have a higher than average SEN intake, and therefore have large numbers of support staff to accommodate this.
The role…
The school have identified the need for some extra support in their Year 3 class, as they have 2 autistic children in the class. Currently, there is one dedicated SEN TA supporting the learning of both children, but as one child’s behaviour has been particularly volatile lately the school has decided that another support assistant is needed to give 1-2-1 support. The child in question at times can be very restless and can’t stay in class for extended periods of time, so the role will require you to spend one to one time with the child when necessary to keep him engaged and calm. At times he can be verbally and physically abusive, so the role will entail handling instances such as this and de-escalating the situation.
The candidate…
The school want someone who has experience of 1-2-1 SEN Support in any capacity (not necessarily a school) as they need someone who can be firm with the child when necessary, as a purely nurturing approach would not effectively manage his behaviour. Therefore anyone with experience in support work or the care industry would be happily accepted by the school. It is essential to the school however that they have worked with children of primary age in some capacity, as when the child is involved in full class activity the role will involve working with other children also.
