Strengthen your school’s SEND support with SLCN trained staff

Date posted : 26 November 2025

Equip your school with staff who go beyond the basics. At Teaching Personnel, we’re proud to offer schools more than just cover. We provide educators who are trained, prepared, and ready to support pupils from day one. Get in touch with us to find out more.

Did you know that speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) is the most common type of need among pupils with special educational needs? It’s estimated that one in ten children in the UK have long-term SLCN. However, it is often considered to be a ‘hidden’ disability with children frequently missed, misinterpreted or misdiagnosed.

That’s why we’ve partnered with SpeechLink to provide an exclusive CPD course focusing on SLCN which is available to all our educators through our CPD Academy. Through this course, we’re building a national pipeline of highly placeable educators who are confident in providing support to every learner, particularly those with SEND or additional needs.

What the course covers:

  • What SLCN is – this covers what SLCN stands for, the basics of what speech, language and communication are, information around key diagnoses

  • Prevalence and impact – this looks at the most up to date government figures for SLCN in school as well as the long-term impact SLCN can have on a person’s life.

  • Development of language and communication skills – including importance of play, language development stages and understanding of how we process language.

  • Challenges of SLCN - what this looks like in schools, easily identified difficulties or behaviours that may only be the tip of the iceberg

  • Importance of identification and raising concerns – why it’s important to raise any concerns, who to raise them with and how to record your observations

  • Case studies – gives an overview of pupils with SLCN and opportunities to read what support they may benefit in class/school

Why choose our SLCN-trained educators for your school?

  1. Skilled at spotting needs early
Educators trained in SLCN understand how speech, language and communication develop. They can identify signs of difficulty quickly and adapt their approach to keep every pupil engaged and supported.

  2. Confident in SEND communication support                                                                                                            With up-to-date knowledge of common communication needs, including DLD and speech sound disorders, our educators bring confidence and skill to supporting pupils’ social, emotional and learning development.

  3. Consistent and inclusive practice                                                                                                                          SLCN-trained educators help create classrooms where all pupils can participate fully. Our educators’ insights promote consistency, reduce frustration and support smooth communication across the whole school.

  4. Improved outcomes for pupils and staff                                                                                                               When teachers understand the “why” behind communication challenges, they respond with empathy and effectiveness. This improves pupil confidence, progress and overall classroom wellbeing.

Whether you need short-term cover or longer-term consistency, SLCN-trained educators bring both skill and sensitivity. They are not only filling a gap, they’re supporting your pupils, your school, and your goals. These trained educators bring immediate value, reduce pressure on school staff, and support a positive school culture.

Our SLCN-trained educators are the specialist staff your school needs now. Get in touch with us today to request high quality educators for your school.
