TP Talent - Meet Amy
This month, we’re shining a light on Amy, one of our brilliant Business Managers in Tyne Tees. From her roots in education to progressing into leadership, she talks us through the realities of managing a fast-paced desk, building meaningful school relationships, and why she loves the people-first side of recruitment. It’s an inspiring look into life at TP.
Tell us about your role at Teaching Personnel.
As a Business Manager at Teaching Personnel, I work closely with schools, multi-academy trusts, and education professionals to understand their needs and provide tailored staffing solutions that genuinely support teaching and learning. I am responsible for developing new opportunities within the sector, nurturing long-term client relationships and maintaining the high standards that Teaching Personnel is known for. Ultimately my role is to connect great educators with the schools I work with, where I feel they can make the biggest impact in helping both our partner schools and pupils.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day as a Business Manager at Teaching Personnel is a blend of people-focused work, strategic planning, and quick problem-solving. I usually start by reviewing school requirements that have come in overnight, confirming bookings, checking candidate availability. Throughout the day we check in with our using clients and plan sales around converting new schools that may need our support. We interview new teachers, write adverts, send tailored marketing out on educators looking for work, the list is endless!
Which office are you based in, and how long have you been with TP?
Based in Tyne Tees and been with the company 2 and half years.
What brought you into education recruitment?
My mam and grandma have always been in the teaching profession, so I've always had the link to the world of education. However, I fell into a sales role straight after I finished studying at uni not really knowing what to do. Sales is always something that has come naturally to me because I love chatting to people, seeing them do well and helping others. I’ve always thought that education recruitment would be a brilliant career with lots of progression and I'm yet to be proven wrong!
What were you doing before joining TP?
Before TP I was working in sales for a construction company called Nixon Hire, before that I worked at Enterprise Rent A Car as part of the management trainee programme. I studied Interior Design at degree level so I’ve always had a passion for creativity alongside wanting to be in a corporate environment where you could progress. This job allows you to be creative within sales so fits perfectly with what I've always wanted to do. You can be creative with your marketing, your sales plans and with enrichment. You will never be bored in this job!
Have you taken on new responsibilities or progressed since joining?
Yes, I've been very fortunate that I've been able to progress from entry level RC to Business Manager for Primary at Tyne Tees. The responsibility does increase as you progress within the team and bill more days for the branch, but you are equally rewarded with the hard work you put in for your own desk and your team. I have also been able to develop further skills through coaching and mentoring other RC’s and supporting them during their probation.
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
My proudest moment has to be being promoted to Business Manager in June 2025. I had a few goals set out at the start of 2025, to become a homeowner, plan my best friend's wedding and achieve this promotion! I can happily say I was able to achieve all 3 which was amazing to finish the year on.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
This job is all about people. I love getting to know schools, understanding their ethos, and building long-term relationships with passionate educators. Those connections make every day different and meaningful.
What’s the biggest challenge you face, and how do you approach it?
One of the biggest challenges I face is managing a very busy desk. With around 200 days to fill, there are always multiple priorities competing for attention; urgent vacancies, long-term planning, candidate care, and school communication all happening at once. To stay on top of everything, I’ve learned that strong time management is essential. I break my day into structured blocks, focus on the tasks that will have the biggest impact, and make sure I’m always staying proactive rather than reactive. Most importantly, I keep communication at the heart of everything. By staying transparent with both schools and teachers, I can manage expectations, stay organised, and build trust even on the busiest days. This challenge keeps me motivated: it pushes me to stay sharp, continuously improve my processes, and deliver the best possible service to the schools and educators I support.
What do your school partners appreciate most about working with TP?
Schools I work with appreciate that I take the time to fully understand their ethos, challenges, and staffing preferences. This means I’m not just sending CVs; I’m matching them with teachers who genuinely fit their environment and make a difference from day one.
What helps you keep good relationships with the clients you work with?
Schools often say they value the transparency and clarity I bring. Whether it’s setting expectations, discussing availability, or updating them on candidates, they know they’ll get straightforward communication without delays or surprises. Other feedback clients consistently highlight is that I’m approachable, responsive, and genuinely invested in their success. They don’t feel like just another booking; I work in partnership with them, and that trust makes a real difference.
What motivates you in your work?
I’m naturally motivated by goals, so filling roles efficiently, getting great feedback, and helping schools feel supported gives me a real sense of achievement. I’ve always wanted to well despite incentives and rewards for doing well. I take pride in my role and my main aim is to look after our candidates. I’m very lucky that I have candidates that are loyal and do a great job every day for the schools we support.
Do you have any goals for the year ahead?
A key goal is to attract and retain more high-quality teachers and support staff. By expanding my pipeline, I can respond even faster during peak demand and ensure schools always have access to the right people. I plan to continue learning: attending training, developing my recruitment skills, improving my understanding of school staffing patterns, and staying up to date with sector trends. Lastly, we have had quite a lot of change on our primary branch this academic year. We have had two newbies join is so another goal is to continue supporting them and see the branch continue to flourish!
