Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Chorley, Lancashire
Salary: £13.75 - £14.50 per hour

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join an independent school in Chorley. The school caters to students aged 6–14 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and associated challenges such as anxiety, ADHD, autism, and speech and language difficulties. Their mission is to provide a nurturing environment where pupils can overcome barriers to learning and rediscover their ability to thrive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Support students in developing social skills, emotional regulation, and strategies for managing challenging behaviour.
  • Collaborate with teachers to adapt lesson plans and learning resources to meet individual needs.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, offering consistent support and encouragement.
  • Help maintain a calm and safe classroom environment using proactive behaviour management strategies.
  • Liaise with parents, SENCOs, and other professionals to provide holistic support.
  • Monitor and track student progress, reporting regularly to the class teacher and SENCO.
  • Promote the overall wellbeing of students and contribute to their personal development.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience working with students who have SEMH needs and challenging behaviour.
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management techniques and a calm, patient approach.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students, helping them to overcome barriers to learning.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
  • A commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Relevant qualifications such as a Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant certificate are desirable.
  • An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one) is required.
