We are currently recruiting for a SEN Teaching Assistant to work with non-verbal students in an independent specialist school in CV11. The school caters for students aged 7-19 years with Autism Spectrum Disorder, communication difficulties, challenging behaviour and related conditions or diagnoses. The role is specifically to work with a class of non-verbal students that need extra support in learning to communicate, express their emotions and develop educationally.
Students at the school have access to the diverse, multi-disciplinary clinical team. Having such a range of support available, delivered by experienced practitioners is a great benefit in supporting our individuals to remove barriers and to reach their full potential. The school day is organised to provide both individual and group work for academic, personal and social skills to be developed. Full use is made of the resources of the local environment, with educational programmes taking individuals into the community for practical activities such as shopping, swimming, horse riding, interacting with people in the community, library visits and country walks.
The school believes that all young people should be provided with appropriate education in a safe, stable, containing learning environment. Special needs teaching assistants are given opportunities to succeed through the use of highly personalised individual education plans to help support their students.
You'll need:
- Sensitivity and understanding
- Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
- To enjoy working with other people
- The ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure
- To be flexible and open to change
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of teaching and the ability to design courses
- Knowledge of psychology
In this role you could be:
- Preparing learning materials under the supervision of the teacher
- Working inside or outside the classroom with individuals or groups
- Adapting support according to needs
- Looking after children's physical, social and emotional welfare
- Creating a stimulating environment
- Giving information and help to teachers
- Keeping records and attending review meeting
