Cover Supervisor - Nottingham

To be a quality Cover Supervisor you need to be a strong character for this role, and that's not just to manage the classroom behaviour but also to build a quick rapport in schools.

Cover supervisors are utilised in schools to support with teachers' non contact periods as well as unforeseen absences.

It can be a rewarding job and a useful way of getting experience in the classroom for those with teaching ambitions.

Salary

As a temporary role Teaching Personnel pay between £55 - £65 a day for cover supervisor work, but may pay more if it is a qualified teacher performing the role.

Hours

This role can be as flexible as you wish it to be, I have the following roles available:

  • Full day cover
  • Half day
  • Hourly Cover - Could be as little as 1 hr a day up to a full day of cover

I am currently recruiting for schools in the following areas, AS A MATTER OF URGENCY:

  • NG2
  • NG9
  • NG3

Cover supervisor duties

The cover supervisor's main job is to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work they have been set.

Officially, cover supervisors:

  • Don't plan
  • Don't always have the subject knowledge
  • Don't mark work
  • Don't set homework
  • Don't differentiate
  • Don't set targets

Many cover supervisors report undertaking the following duties (also):

  • Teaching grammar
  • Managing behaviour
  • Discussing and debating texts with pupils and answering questions
  • Differentiating and allocating extension exercises.

Qualifications needed to become a cover supervisor

Cover supervisors are often highly qualified and may even have QTS (it's a good way for NQT's to get experience). As a minimum educational institutes like their CSs to have experience of working with young people.

Skills and knowledge

The following are desirable:

  • Highly adaptable as there is no a regular timetable
  • Have a thick skin
  • Behaviour management skills
  • Be diplomatic

The upsides

Cover supervisors - Every day is different. You may also work within behaviour teams when you are not covering so it's always a busy, diverse day. CS are respected in the schools I work with because teachers need those people that can step in when they are away.

  • Enhanced (Child Work Force) DBS
  • 2 Recent References
  • Have a full UK driving license and have access to a car
