Teaching Personnel are looking for highly motivated and committed individuals in search of support roles within mainstream secondary schools. A secondary school in Fareham are in search of Teaching Assistants to work with their most vulnerable pupils upon returning to school in September including those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health requirements.

You will support pupils to embrace different learning styles and opportunities to help them receive the positive attention around their school work that they require to succeed. You will encourage students to develop the belief that they can achieve at school and not just in their education, but in building other skills too alongside the schools SEN provision. Many pupils with SEMH cannot see beyond the classroom and have lose out on these opportunities because their behaviour is a barrier, but with the right guidance, support and engagement, secondary school could be a turning point for them.

The successful candidate would be involved with supporting individual students through classroom activities including core subjects such as Maths and English and will be involved in the planning and running of small group interventions. In other curricular areas you will work on a 1:1 basis with students with more bespoke timetable and educational plans to help them to access, participate and achieve alongside their peers. Knowledge or experience of working with children who display challenging behaviour and who have learning difficulties is desirable. Candidates with experience of working alongside students with social, emotional and mental health needs would be welcomed.

Candidate specification:

Essential:

GCSE grade C or Level 2 equivalent functional skills in English and Maths

Excellent classroom and behaviour management skills

An ability to understand the principles of learning processes and in particular barriers to learning

The ability to recognise and be sensitive to the individual needs of students

Effective and professional communication skills with the ability to engage young people

Highly adaptable and flexible

Ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and well-being of students

Desirable:

Foundation degree or Level 5 relevant qualification/skills

Experience of working with young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties and/or challenging behaviour

Experience of working with students with a range of Special Educational Needs such as ADHD and ASD

Understanding of alternative and therapeutic interventions for student progression

The ability to work effectively as part of a team, but also to use initiative within the guidelines set by teaching staff with tact and diplomacy

Evidence of proficient Information Technology skills and the confidence and willingness to use and develop them

A willingness to increase own knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning

The school is set in large ground with excellent sport facilities and a recently modernised central block for core subjects. The SEN provision is set in its own building as a safe space for pupils to access when in need and to differentiate for those pupils who are particularly vulnerable and may be in crisis. The school is easiest to access via car with parking on site for all staff. Local public transport is accessible also.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
