Four Transferable Skills That Mean you are Made for an Education Job
If you have been feeling out of place in your current job role, then it might time to evaluate your career and consider making a change. As you grow and evolve, it is normal to suddenly feel as though you are meant to be doing something more meaningful.
According to a study by Jobrapido, an average of 62% of the UK workforce aspire to change their career path. You’re definitely not the only one in pursuit of new career avenues.
If you are reading this, we are going to assume that you are interested in a position in education. In that case, you have come to the right place. Teaching is an enriching and exciting profession that lets you nurture the leaders and thinkers of tomorrow. The good news is that this career goal may be easier to achieve than you think.
Many of your acquired skills can be transferred to secure your role as an educator so that you can seamlessly redefine your career.
What are transferable skills?
Transferable skills are abilities that can be useful in more than one type of role. They can be leveraged to highlight your experience when applying for a new work placement in a completely different industry.
For example, jobs in marketing require individuals who can communicate with empathy. This type of skill can be transferred into the working routine of a primary teacher, a position that also requires thoughtful communication skills.
If you have one or more of the skills mentioned below, an education job could be the perfect fit for you.
1. Time management
The ability to manage your time is a very valuable skill for teachers. Educators need to create well-organised, structured lesson plans that adhere to timeframes. Without good time-management, the right information won’t be taught in time to prepare students for their exams.
2. Public speaking
If you are comfortable engaging an audience and delivering speeches and presentations, then you may have what it takes to confidently communicate with students. Great lessons are rooted in a mixture of public speaking skills, subject knowledge and the teaching theory you learn in your teacher training and NQT year. If you already have the first one nailed down, the other two are yours to master.
3. Emotional resilience
Pupils will bring all manners of experiences with them to the classroom. This is where your pre-existing emotional resilience comes in handy in fulfilling your duty of care. Emotional intelligence and resilience will help you adapt to tricky situations that may not be within your comfort zone. Plus, having this skill will make you well-equipped to build resilience in the classroom and promote emotional wellbeing among pupils.
4. Leadership
Great leadership matters in teaching. If you can motivate and inspire a team of co-workers, you can motivate and inspire a classroom of students too. Your leadership skills mean that you will be good at listening and communicating messages effectively and at bringing students on board with your ideas.
As you progress with your career in education, your leadership skills can be applied in other areas. For example, you may want to join the school leadership team or become a head of year at your school . A background in leadership in a previous role will put you in good stead here.
