Supply Teachers & Cover Supervisors
Job description
Supply Teachers & Cover Supervisors | Brighton Secondary Schools | Day-to-Day Work
I don't need you available five days a week. I do need to know I can rely on the days you give me.
I'm currently strengthening my pool of Supply Teachers and Cover Supervisors for secondary schools across Brighton and the surrounding areas.
And rather than dressing this up as something it isn't, here's exactly what I'm recruiting for.
I need good educators who actively want casual, flexible work.
People who might only want one, two or three days each week. People balancing work around other commitments. Teachers who want to stay in the classroom without returning to a permanent timetable.
The amount of work can fluctuate, so this isn't necessarily the right option if you need five guaranteed days every week.
But if flexibility is genuinely what you're looking for, it can work extremely well.
A Typical Morning in Supply
Schools can begin contacting me from around 6:30am—and occasionally earlier.
A teacher has woken up unwell. A school suddenly has three classes uncovered. They need somebody that morning.
That's when I start calling the people who've told me they're available.
Other bookings are completely different. Schools may book you several days or weeks ahead for planned absence, training or other cover requirements.
You'll therefore get a mixture of pre-booked and genuine same-day work.
The One Thing I Ask in Return
Be realistic with your availability.
If you can only work Wednesdays, tell me Wednesdays. That's useful.
If you're free Monday, Tuesday and Friday, tell me that.
You don't need to keep your entire week clear just in case I call.
But when you tell me you're available, I need to be able to treat that availability seriously—particularly when I'm trying to find someone for a school at 6:30 in the morning.
Good communication makes the whole system work.
Supply Teachers AND Cover Supervisors
I'm recruiting for both.
Supply Teachers will generally need QTS or an appropriate equivalent and will provide classroom teaching during staff absence.
Cover Supervisors do not need QTS. You'll supervise pre-prepared work, manage the classroom and ensure pupils remain engaged while their usual teacher is absent.
Cover Supervisor work can be a particularly good option for:
- Graduates considering teaching
- Experienced Cover Supervisors
- Sports coaches
- Tutors
- Youth workers
- People with strong experience working with groups of young people
What Happens When a School Likes You?
This is where supply gets interesting.
Schools remember good people.
If you arrive on time, build rapport with pupils, manage the classroom confidently and work well with staff, there's a very good chance they'll ask for you again.
That's how an occasional booking can become regular work at the same schools—and how longer-term opportunities sometimes develop.
Practical Information
- Secondary schools across Brighton & surrounding areas
- Day-to-day and pre-booked assignments
- Opportunities throughout the 2026/27 academic year
- Competitive daily rates appropriate to your role and experience
- Flexible work around your genuine availability
- CPD and training available
Driving isn't essential, but having access to a car is a significant advantage for day-to-day supply and will increase the number of schools and last-minute bookings you can access.
You'll need an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service. If you don't currently have one, you'll need to apply through us and join the Update Service. I'll support you with the process, though the cost is covered by the applicant.
Our safeguarding checks also require a full employment and education history and references covering 24 months of employment in total where possible.
Interested?
I'm not trying to collect hundreds of names on a database.
I'm trying to build a reliable pool of educators who I can get to know, work with regularly and confidently recommend to my schools.
If you're looking for genuinely flexible secondary work and that arrangement suits you, apply today and let's have a chat.
All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
Teaching Personnel is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer all our registered candidates FREE child protection and prevent duty training. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Full assistance provided.
