Special Needs Teaching Assistant - Wakefield

Job description

We are currently looking for an experienced teaching assistant to work at an SEN school in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The school caters for a range of primary aged pupils with a range of SEN (including Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties and Speech and Language Delay). You will be required to support these pupils and re-engage them as fully as possible back in to education. Your role will include nurture and offer additional support with communication, including those pupils with a mechanical system of communication such as PECS. You may also be required to use British Sign Language and/or Makaton, (a form of sign language for SEN pupils) so training in either of these would be beneficial.

We are looking for a flexible candidate that is willing to support school staff and pupils with supply work - both short term and long term. A desirable candidate will have a full driving license and their own transport or be willing to travel up to an hour on public transport.

You will have strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate with families, carers and a multidisciplinary team of teaching staff, social workers, speech and language therapists and educational psychologists. You will be organised, patient and confident, with a sound understanding of meeting the social, emotional and mental health needs of young people with Special Educational Needs.
Experience or training in the following is also desirable:
· Picture Exchange Communication (PECS)
· Makaton or BSL (to any level)
· Autism Awareness/ASC Training
· Team Teach
· Moving and Handling

We have a number of clients across Huddersfield and Wakefield and the candidate that we are looking for will be working in an SEN setting with pupils of primary age. These schools can be particularly challenging so we need somebody who is resilient and committed to helping these students.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualification and training for this role. For teacher roles, we require a formally recognised teaching qualification. For Support staff our minimum requirement is GCSE English & Maths (A-C) or equivalent.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.
