Job description

FULL TIME NURTURE SUPPORT ROLE WORKING WITH NEW YEAR 7 PUPILS THAT NEED EXTRA SUPPORT WITH THE TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY TO SECONDARY SCHOOL. THE ROLE STARTS ASAP AND COULD CONTINUE INTO THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR TO SUPPORT WITH THE NEW INTAKE.

A partner-school in Cardiff is looking for 2 full-time Learning Support Assistants to work with the new group of year 7s. These pupils have been highlighted by their primary schools to need extra support with their transition due to having high levels of anxiety and have found the move up to Secondary school very overwhelming.  The group you will be working with will include 10-12 pupils that will need support not only with their education but mainly with their social skills and bridging the gap between Year 6 & 7. You need to be able to build relationships quickly and support these vulnerable pupils who may not have the support they need outside of the school environment. The pupils can often get frustrated and show signs of challenging behaviour that need to be supported with a nurturing, caring and resilient approach.

ESSENTIAL

  • Have Full Time Availability Mon-Fri (8:15-15:00)
  • Be able to start April/May
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Resilience and a caring/supportive nature
  • Looking for a career working with vulnerable young people

These pupils are supported in a classroom setting that tries to slowly integrate them into the mainstream school when their confidence and behaviour allows. As this nurture unit has several long-term objectives, you will be a key member in ensuring that the pupils are able to gain a sense of routine and continuity. As there are only plans to expand parts of this area, the school want to take the successful candidate onto permanent contract after a successful probationary period.

ADVANTAGEOUS TO THE ROLE

  • Experience working in a similar environment, this could be Secondary, Primary or Special school settings. If you do not have school or educational experience, we have found people from backgrounds in Care, Youth work and Sports Coaching have been successful with similar roles. Any work where you need to support varying needs of young people is an advantage
  • Have at least C-grade in GCSE Maths and English- but should your academic achievements not be to this level, you are encouraged to apply should you have skills, experiences, or qualifications in alternative curriculum and BTEC, vocations and basic skills

The school is a 11-19 Secondary school in Cardiff and is easily accessible via car or public transport. There is onsite parking and bus routes that run from the city centre to the school. The school have specialist provisions for SEN, Behaviour and Nurture and they also have a large emphasis on basic skills, vocational subjects and low ability groups for the learning needs departments. The school has a lot of pupils who have additional learning needs, and these bring frustrations that fuel behavioural issues and concerns regarding pupil engagement and attendance.

The school are looking to hear from potential candidates ASAP so if you are interested in an exciting yet challenging new role then please send a Current CV via the link provided.
