An exciting opportunity for someone with experience working with challenging behaviour and/or mental health needs.

1-1 Teaching Assistant supporting pupils with behaviour needs.

Teaching Personnel are working with a client school in the Colcchester area, seeking Teaching Assistants to support pupils on a 1-1 basis. The school is a PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) in Colchester catering for students between the ages of 11-16, who have been excluded from mainstream education. All students have behavioural difficulties such as SEMH (social, emotional and mental health needs), ADHD and Autism. The schools aim is to ensure every pupil has the opportunity to achieve his or her best. They are extremely successful and provide a personalised education which is always tailored to the individual needs of the pupil. The pupils are all within the Secondary age group, in Key stages 3 and 4. The pupils can display challenging behaviour so you must be confident supporting this. 

As a 1-1 Teaching Assistant, you will be working with an individual pupil under the guidance of the class teacher; to support them with their education and to provide emotional and behavioural support. This role can be based inside the classroom, outside of the class in an allocated workspace, or may be off-site. You will also be responsible for reporting any safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Officer. The pupils are aged 11-16 years and working at KS3 and KS4 level, either towards GCSE or Functional Skills.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • experience working with children and/or young adults with behaviour needs
  • resilience and confidence dealing with challenging behaviour
  • an understanding of the National Curriculum to be able to support pupils with their work
  • a full, clean driving licence and access to a vehicle for off-site work
  • a calm, nurturing approach
  • a good sense of humour
  • Team Teach training (Teaching Personnel can support you with this if you don't already have this)

Experience in a school is not required, we would also welcome applicants with experience in Sports Coaching, Youth Work, Residential and Social Care, Childcare and Mental Health Support, as well as graduates of relevant subjects, and people with personal experiences of supporting these needs (e.g. family members).

This is initially a temporary position, however there will be the opportunities to become permanent for the right candidate.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
