Anti-bullying week - 14th to 18th November 2022
Anti-Bullying Week 2022 will take place from Monday 14 November to Friday 18 November and the theme this year is Reach Out. Anti-Bullying Week helps raise awareness of bullying amongst children and young people and helps schools tackle bullying that takes place both online and face-to-face. Findings from the Anti-Bullying Alliance show that 93% of young people feel that Anti-Bullying Week helps raise awareness of bullying.
Teaching Personnel is proud to support Anti-Bullying week and has signed up to the pledge to help reduce bullying in schools. The week will kick off with Odd Socks Day on Monday, 14th November, where teachers and pupils can wear odd socks to celebrate what makes everyone unique.
Support for Teachers and Support Staff
The Anti-Bullying Alliance has launched a free CPD-certified anti-bullying online training for anyone that works with children and young people. With 14 courses to choose from, topics include:
- 10 principles to reduce bullying
- Preventing bullying
- Responding to bullying
- Cyberbullying (Online bullying)
- Bullying and SEN/Disability
- Reducing Disablist Bullying: Disabilities, the Equality Act and Schools Duties
Ways for Schools to Support Anti-Bullying Week
It is a chance for schools to embark on their anti-bullying journey and sign-up for a free whole-school programme for schools. Institutions can sign-up to be supporters of Anti-Bullying Week online, where you can download a certificate for your school to display.
Anti-Bullying Week is also a great opportunity to review your current Anti-Bullying policy as a school and make recommendations. There is guidance and advice to support this online.
Involving pupils in Anti-Bullying Week
Findings from the Department for Education (DoE) in 2016 reported that approximately one child in every classroom experiences bullying daily. Asking pupils about the issues in their school community and what activities they feel would be helpful can help schools make the most of the week.
- Ask pupils what activities they’d like to see delivered during Anti-Bullying Week.
- Ask pupils what they think about bullying in their school community.
- Ask students what they’d like to see their school do to prevent and respond to it.
- Allow a group of pupils to plan and deliver a school assembly or part of a lesson.
- Pupils could plan a fundraising event such as Odd Socks Day, a bake sale or fun run.
