Job description

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate tutors to support Looked After Children (LAC) in Sunderland with their educational development. As a LAC Tutor, you will provide 1:1 or small group tuition in core subjects (English, Maths, and/or Science), helping students reach their academic potential in a nurturing and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver personalised lessons tailored to the student’s individual learning needs and EHCP/PEP targets.

  • Build positive relationships to support emotional wellbeing alongside academic progress.

  • Maintain clear communication with carers, social workers, and educational professionals.

  • Complete regular progress reports and attend PEP meetings when required.

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all students in your care.

Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), PGCE, or relevant tutoring experience.

  • Experience working with vulnerable children, particularly Looked After Children (LAC).

  • Strong knowledge of the UK National Curriculum.

  • Enhanced DBS check (on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one).

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

  • Patience, empathy, and a trauma-informed approach to learning.

Desirable:

  • Experience with SEND/SEMH learners.

  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection practices.

  • Access to a vehicle and willingness to travel locally (if face-to-face tuition is required).

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
