Teaching Assistant – Primary & Secondary Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Location: Basingstoke
Hours: Full-Time, Monday to Friday, Term Time Only
Pay: Equivalent to £14.25 per hour

We are seeking a compassionate and committed Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN provision from September. This is an excellent opportunity to support children and young people across both primary and secondary age groups within a highly supportive and inclusive educational environment.

The school caters specifically for pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), and associated social, emotional and communication needs.

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to pupils' educational journeys while developing your own skills and experience within specialist education. There are opportunities for increased responsibility, enhanced rates of pay, and the potential for a permanent position following a successful initial placement.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality support that enables pupils to engage with learning, develop independence, and achieve their individual outcomes.

No two days are the same. You will play a key role in creating a positive and structured learning environment where every pupil feels supported, valued, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting teachers to deliver engaging, inclusive lessons

• Providing one-to-one and small group support tailored to individual learning needs

• Adapting classroom activities and resources to support pupil engagement

• Encouraging communication, confidence, independence and social development

• Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, routines and transitions throughout the school day

• Helping pupils work towards their individual Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes where appropriate

• Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils

• Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and other professionals to support pupil progress

While you will not be expected to lead whole-class teaching, experience delivering small-group interventions or targeted learning activities would be beneficial.

About You

We are looking for individuals who are patient, adaptable and genuinely passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs.

Previous SEN experience is welcomed but not essential. We encourage applications from candidates with experience in:

• Schools or education settings

• Nursery or childcare

• Residential or supported living

• Care or support work

• Youth work or mentoring

• Healthcare

• Sports coaching

• Community or customer-facing roles where supporting others has been a key part of your work

This role is subject to an enhanced Child Workforce DBS check and all relevant safeguarding and pre-employment checks in line with safer recruitment practices. Applicants who do not currently hold a DBS registered with the Update Service will be required to obtain one before commencing employment.
