We require a Teaching Assistant to support young people with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within an alternative provision in Scissett.

Our client is a maintained special school for 7-16 year olds with SEMH needs. Situated in the rural area of Scissett, the school is easily accessible by car from the nearby towns of Huddersfield, Wakefield, Leeds and Halifax. The school also benefits from local public transport links by both train and bus.

The school provides and alternative approach to 'behaviour' - achieving positive results through conversation and avoiding traditional punishment/reward systems of behaviour management. As a Teaching Assistant, you will work with colleagues to build mutually respectful relationships with young people and will model respectful relationships with each other and with other people.

Our client is proud to provide an environment where nurture and play are encouraged, helping to resolve conflict and support young people to effectively manage their own emotions and to self regulate. Staff successfully manage challenging behaviour by developing secure attachments, building self-esteem and developing an understanding of emotional regulation throughout school.

All pupils receive an individualised approach to help them participate in school life to the best of their potential. You will work closely with a key group of vulnerable young people, supporting them to access the curriculum as well as implementing bespoke activities such as Play and Lego Therapy and Nurture Groups. You will be flexible in your approach and will have a resilient nature.

Essential Criteria:

  • Ability to work successfully and holistically with pupils with SEMH needs
  • Ability to work constructively as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate at all levels i.e. Staff, pupils, home and key professionals
  • Flexible and able to respond quickly to new situations
  • Able to recognise own training needs and willing to undergo relevant training
  • Ability to support families and carers of pupils with SEMH needs

We are seeking individuals who are passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and who are ideally seeking a long term career in education. Teaching Personnel are committed to supporting you in finding your ideal role in education and we will work with you to ensure your skillset is matched with the right setting. Please contact Rebecca Barham for more information.
