Are you familiar with British Sign Language, Makaton or Sign Along and want to work in a school based environment?
Here at Teaching Personnel we support a number of special educational needs schools whose students have speech and language development delay, are non-verbal or have hearing impairments. These students use alternative ways of communicating based on their ability, which can include British Sign Language, Makaton, Sign Along or PECS (Picture exchange cards).
As a Teaching Assistant supporting these students, having knowledge of these forms of communication are essential to best support the children and understand their needs such as emotional well-being and personal care. You will support them in the classroom with their sensory and cognitive activities, and assist them to communicate their needs and encourage them to use verbal language and develop speech where necessary/appropriate.
Teaching Assistant work can be done on a number of contracts; supply, temp (long and short term) and permanent roles so can be flexible to meet those with other commitments - you just need to have availability Monday to Friday 8.30am-3.30pm.
Ideally you will meet the following requirements;
- Level 1 British sign language minimum/ Makaton/ Sign Along
- Knowledge of Special needs (predominantly Autism/Downs Syndrome)
- Experience working with children/ in education / with SEN
- Have an enhanced CHILD workforce DBS, registered to the update service
