Special educational needs teaching assistant

An exciting opportunity to join the staff of a highly successful SEN school as a Teaching Assistant. This is a full time position to start asap!

The roles and responsibilities for the position include:

  • To provide additional input (e.g. withdrawal 1:1 or of small groups) where appropriate, delivering intervention programmes.
  • To support named pupils in improving motivation, confidence and self-esteem.
  • Under the guidance of the Head of Learning Support, maintain SEN records pertaining to named pupils.
  • To advise staff about named pupils specific SEN/LDD needs; identifying potential barriers and suggesting strategies and resources.
  • To support teachers in implementing specific teaching programmes.
  • To work pro-actively with all other members of staff to ensure the care and safety of all children.
  • To attend staff meetings, as appropriate.
  • To identify personal training needs and to attend appropriate internal and external in-service training.

The experience and skills required for this role include:

Essential:

  • A good basic education to GCSE level in English and Maths, or the equivalent.
  • A willingness to undertake further training.
  • Experience of working with children.
  • The ability to relate well to children and adults and establish positive relationships.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • A basic understanding of child development and learning processes.
  • A basic awareness of policy/legislation relating to safeguarding and health and safety.
  • A positive approach and the ability to encourage and enthuse.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Good use of own initiative and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Effective time management.
  • Patience and the ability to be calm under pressure.

Desirable:

  • Further relevant qualifications, (e.g., NVQ, Teaching Assistant Qualification, specific training relating to learning difficulties and/ or disabilities).
  • Experience of working with children in an educational environment.
  • Experience of working with children with SEN and/or disabilities.
  • A working knowledge of positive behaviour management strategies.
  • A working knowledge of relevant policies and legislation (e.g., safeguarding).
