Teaching Assistant – Special Educational Needs

Do you have a passion for supporting vulnerable young people and experience working with SEN children?

Join a vibrant and well rated school in the heart of York that are looking to hire a Teaching Assistant specialising in Special Educational Needs to work with SEN, SEMH and other vulnerable students. This is a full-time and temporary position with the opportunity attached to become permanent in the new academic year.  

Candidate requirements for the role:

  • Experience working with SEN and SEMH young people e.g. classroom, sports coaching, mentoring, tutoring
  • Experience supporting young people from residential care or youth work backgrounds e.g. volunteering, youth work, residential care, support work
  • Degree educated in subjects such as Maths, English, Physical Education, Psychology would be ideal and beneficial
  • Child workforce DBS certificate on the update service/ candidate is eligible and willing to apply for one
  • Suitable employment-based references with no safeguarding concerns or disciplinary issues attached

The successful candidate will work with SEN and SEMH students in the classroom, assisting them with tasks and instructions and ensuring they do not fall behind and limiting the amount of external/ out of classroom learning required.

SEN Teaching Assistants will also help to organise and take part in small group and 1-1 intervention and pastoral support sessions for vulnerable students alongside SEN coordinators. These sessions will focus on improving academic attainment, creating positive relationships with work, behaviour and attendance and building overall self-esteem and inclusion amongst vulnerable students.

Highlights of this position:

  • Providing in class support to SEN, SEMH and other vulnerable students in classroom scenarios
  • Providing 1-1 and small group academic intervention and pastoral support to raise attainment, self-esteem and inclusion
  • Join a dedicated team of support staff, SEN coordinators and school senior leadership dedicated to student welfare
  • Up to GBP350 a week pay
  • Ideal for candidates local to York

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
