SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Bury

Are you resilient, compassionate, and passionate about supporting young learners with complex needs to reach their full potential? Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a specialist primary SEN setting.

The setting provides education for children aged 3–11 with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Pupils follow highly personalised learning pathways tailored to their individual needs, ensuring every child can access education in a meaningful and supportive way.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference, supporting children in developing communication, independence, and life skills within a nurturing and structured environment.

About the Role:

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists, support staff, and parents/carers to provide consistent, personalised support. You will help create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where pupils can thrive, access tailored learning, and progress in line with their EHCPs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Supporting pupils with PMLD, SLD, and ASD, following individual EHCP targets
• Providing 1:1 and small group support, adapting activities to meet sensory, cognitive, and communication needs
• Using communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton, visual timetables, and sensory tools
• Supporting pupils during regulated and dysregulated behaviours using de-escalation and positive behaviour strategies
• Assisting in delivering sensory-based and experiential learning activities
• Creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment
• Encouraging independence, emotional wellbeing, confidence, and life skills through consistent routines
• Assisting with personal care needs including toileting, feeding, mobility, and changing where required

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Confident, proactive, and able to use initiative when supporting children with complex needs
  • Experience working with children with PMLD, SLD, or ASD
  • Patient, nurturing, and resilient with a genuine passion for SEN
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Willingness to support with personal care and physical needs
  • Available full-time and committed to a long-term role

Desirable:
• Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, or other alternative communication methods
• Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification or SEN training

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
