Job description

Teaching Personnel are currently recruiting for a dedicated and resilient SEMH Learning Mentor to support pupils within a specialist provision in Leigh, Lancashire.

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about supporting children and young people who experience social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, behavioural challenges, and barriers to education. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping pupils build confidence, regulate emotions, and positively engage within school.


About the Role

As an SEMH Learning Mentor, you will work closely with pupils who may:

  • Experience emotional dysregulation and behavioural difficulties
  • Have SEMH needs alongside ASC and ADHD
  • Struggle with engagement in education
  • Require consistent pastoral and behavioural support
  • Present with trauma-related or attachment-based needs

The role will involve providing both classroom and pastoral support to help pupils achieve positive outcomes academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group mentoring support
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Supporting emotional regulation and implementing de-escalation strategies
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, resilience, and engagement with learning
  • Acting as a positive role model for vulnerable young people
  • Supporting pupils during challenging situations and transitions throughout the school day
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and external professionals
  • Assisting with behaviour support plans and intervention strategies
  • Creating a calm, structured, and nurturing environment for pupils

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for individuals who are:

  • Patient, resilient, and emotionally aware
  • Passionate about supporting young people with SEMH needs
  • Confident managing challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner
  • Strong relationship-builders with excellent communication skills
  • Proactive, adaptable, and supportive within education settings

Experience in the following areas is desirable:

  • SEMH schools or alternative provisions
  • Behaviour mentoring or intervention work
  • Youth work or pastoral support
  • Care or residential settings
  • Sports coaching or mentoring
  • SEN support roles
  • Psychology or Criminology graduates
