Secondary Supply Teachers & Cover Supervisors | Brighton & Surrounding Areas

There are plenty of reasons why someone might want to work in a school without wanting a permanent school job.

Maybe you still enjoy teaching, but you're ready for a bit more separation between work and the rest of your life.

Maybe you're an ECT and you'd like to experience a few different schools before deciding where you want to settle.

Perhaps you're considering teaching and want proper classroom experience before committing to training.

Or maybe your life simply doesn't fit neatly around a Monday-to-Friday school timetable.

I'm recruiting Secondary Supply Teachers and Cover Supervisors across Brighton and the surrounding areas, with opportunities ranging from occasional day-to-day cover through to more regular and pre-booked work.

The flexibility works both ways

Supply is built around availability.

You tell me the days you'd like to work, and I'll look for suitable bookings on those days.

That could mean five days one week and two the next. It could mean that Wednesday is always your supply day. Or perhaps you only want occasional work.

There's no particular pattern you have to fit into.

Some bookings will also give you more notice than others.

Schools arrange plenty of cover in advance, but unexpected absence is naturally part of supply too. Schools can begin contacting me from around 6:30am, and occasionally earlier, so there may be mornings where I get in touch early to offer you a same-day booking.

If you prefer work that's arranged beforehand, that's completely fine too. Just let me know how you'd ideally like supply to work for you.

For qualified teachers

I'm interested in hearing from teachers across a range of secondary subjects.

You'll generally need QTS or an appropriate equivalent, and I'm happy to speak with ECTs, experienced teachers, people returning after a break and those stepping away from permanent positions.

Bookings can range from general daily cover to teaching within your subject specialism, and occasionally longer-term opportunities become available too.

One of the benefits of supply is that you get to experience schools from the inside before making any bigger decisions about where you might want to work in future.

For Cover Supervisors

You don't need QTS.

As a Cover Supervisor, you'll generally be overseeing lessons using work prepared by the school, supporting pupils to stay on task and maintaining the classroom environment while their usual teacher is absent.

Previous Cover Supervisor experience is useful, but there are other backgrounds that can translate well.

I'm happy to speak with sports coaches, youth workers, tutors, mentors, graduates considering teaching and people with other relevant experience working with groups of young people.

If you're considering a career in teaching, it's also a useful way to find out what working in a secondary school actually feels like before taking that next step.

It gets more familiar

One concern people sometimes have about supply is the thought of constantly walking into completely unfamiliar schools.

There will inevitably be some of that at first.

But as you work, you start finding the schools you enjoy. Staff get to know you, you become familiar with routines and schools may ask for you again.

Where I can, I'll always try to create that continuity.

You can keep the flexibility of supply while gradually developing relationships with a smaller network of schools around Brighton.

Being realistic about the work

Day-to-day supply isn't guaranteed.

School demand changes throughout the year, so there can be busy weeks and quieter periods.

If you need a consistent five-day working week, it's worth telling me because a longer-term placement may be a better option.

But if having control over your availability is important, supply can be a really practical way of keeping education in your working life without it having to dictate the rest of it.

Driving is helpful but not essential. Having access to a car simply opens up more schools and can make short-notice bookings outside central Brighton easier.

Registration & safeguarding

You'll need an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service. If you don't currently hold one, you'll need to apply through us and join the Update Service. I'll support you through the process, although the associated cost is covered by the applicant.

We'll also require a full employment and education history and references covering 24 months of employment in total where possible, prioritising recent and relevant employment.
