If you are someone who is experienced or trained in Youth Work, Social Care or Psychology, we work with a number of Pupil Referral Units in the Manchester and Greater Manchester area who are looking for support workers.
As a support worker, you will work in the PRU with up to 16 students who are all currently excluded from mainstream education. This may be due to a number of social and emotional needs, mental health issues, challenging behaviour or an inability to cope in the mainstream environment.
The objective of the PRU is to provide an alternative education for the students, whilst mentoring them in regards to their difficulties, to prepare them for their hopeful return to mainstream school.
You can expect to deal with some challenging behaviour, alongside attention deficit therefore a candidate will need a resilient and persistent personality to cope with the students who may lose concentration. In the classroom and within activities students will need prompts and assistance to stay on task, stay focused and remain engaged in the lesson. The curriculum is designed to be less stressful but equally as inclusive so that the students take an interest in building their skills and knowledge.
Other responsibilities in the role will include mentoring the students either in small groups or on a 1:1 basis, helping them to work through their emotional or social difficulties, and advising them on how to make progress with their attitude and learning. Again you may find students are not immediately receptive or engaged, so a patient and calm approach is necessary.
Ideal candidates should have some of the following:
Training in Team-Teach, de-escalation and crisis management
A knowledge of the secondary curriculum (some students may work at a lower KS level than appropriate for their age
Able to make on the spot decisions and think on their feet
Able to create a supportive and safe environment for the students
A calm and caring personality, but with emotional resilience
Experience with SEN/SEMH needs
