Learning Support Assistant (SEN)
Job description
Learning Support Assistants
Location: Andover, Hampshire
Hours: Monday–Friday, Term Time Only
Pay: £14.25 per hour
We are recruiting Learning Support Assistants to join specialist schools in the Andover area. These schools support pupils with a range of additional needs, including autism, complex learning difficulties, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
This is a rewarding opportunity for people who are patient, supportive, and interested in helping young people build confidence, develop skills, and achieve positive outcomes both in and out of the classroom.
The schools provide structured and supportive environments with small class sizes, strong staff teams, and a focus on pupils’ academic, social, and emotional development.
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupils throughout the school day. The role is varied, hands-on, and centred around building positive relationships and helping pupils feel safe, engaged, and supported.
Responsibilities include:
-
Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
-
Assisting with lesson activities and adapting learning materials where needed
-
Encouraging focus, participation, and confidence in learning
-
Supporting communication, social skills, and independence
-
Helping pupils manage emotions and behaviour using consistent strategies
-
Creating a calm, safe, and positive classroom environment
-
Working closely with teachers, support staff, and external professionals
-
Supporting pupils during transitions, breaktimes, and daily routines
The SEN settings focus more on structure, communication, and routine, while the SEMH settings place a stronger emphasis on emotional support, trust, boundaries, and positive role modelling.
We welcome applications from people with experience in areas such as education, care, youth work, mentoring, mental health support, sports coaching, residential care, or customer-facing roles. Previous SEN or SEMH experience is helpful but not essential, as full training and ongoing support will be provided.
We’re looking for people who are patient, calm, resilient, and able to build positive relationships with young people. Strong communication skills, reliability, flexibility, and a willingness to learn are all important for the role.
What’s offered:
-
Term-time only working hours
-
Ongoing training and development opportunities
-
Supportive school teams and leadership
-
Valuable experience within specialist education settings
-
The opportunity to make a real difference to young people’s lives
-
Potential long-term opportunities within education and SEN support
