BSL Support (British Sign Language)

A school in the Stockport area are looking to hire Teaching Assistants who have a good knowledge of BSL, to work with the students with a mixture of Special Educational Needs.
Many of the students have conditions such as Autism, Aspergers and other learning difficulties, including hearing impairments, which mean that they mainly use BSL or Makaton to communicate.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will be expected to support the students within each other their classes, either within a group or on a 1:1 basis with one student you are assigned to, and help them to communicate and understand the class work. Having a point of contact is important for the students to be able to express their feelings and thoughts freely without restrictions, and help them feel confident and understood in their school.

The role takes place within school hours (generally 8.30am-3.30pm) and is available on a temporary basis until summer, with opportunities for long term and permanent positions to come available in the new school year. The role is available both part time and full time and can be flexible to meet your needs.

Requirements

Ideally, applicants will have a knowledge of BSL up to level 2 as a minimum, and have some experience using it in a work capacity however experience is not essential.
We would also prefer applicants to have some experience either with special educational needs, childcare or education and are familiar with supporting in one of these areas.

All applicants MUST have a child only DBS which is registered to the update service, or be willing to obtain one via Teaching Personnel.
