How Teaching Assistants (TAs) Help Schools Thrive

Date posted : 20 September 2024

Teaching assistants (TAs) are an invaluable part of schools today. Their dedication and hard work deserve to be celebrated! Their impact is so meaningful that pupils often remember the difference TAs have made in their educational journeys for years to come.

There are around 295,000 teaching assistants in schools across England and Wales. National Teaching Assistants’ Day on Friday, 27th September 2024, serves as a reminder of the vital role TAs play in schools.

TA numbers have trebled over the last two decades. This growth reflects how much schools rely on TAs to maintain excellence and create nurturing learning environments. It also shows how integral learning support workers have become to keeping schools running. They support both pupils and teachers. Their involvement goes beyond academic assistance. In 2024, TAs are helping schools create inclusive and effective learning environments. Their contributions are truly remarkable and worthy of recognition.

Creating an inclusive learning environment

TAs are essential in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. They help create an inclusive learning environment with one-on-one or small-group help for learners who need it. TAs ensure that all pupils access the curriculum. This is important with the increased focus on personalised learning plans and mental health support. TAs provide emotional and social support. They help create trusting environments that enable pupils to feel welcome and absorb information.

Supporting pupils

Teaching assistants provide support by helping to oversee the class. They assist pupils who have questions, need encouragement, or help with assigned tasks. TAs are involved in other supervisory roles. This includes after-school clubs, lunchtime supervision, and lesson cover.

Supporting diverse learning needs

TAs support learners with special educational needs (SEN) and help implement Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). This tailored support ensures no child is left behind. Teaching assistants with extra training also support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). As these needs can be complex, schools rely on teaching assistants to help SEN pupils take full advantage of their education.

Their involvement in pastoral care and emotional support is increasingly recognised, making them indispensable in creating a nurturing and supportive school environment. Findings show that almost half (44%) of parents of autistic children want more teaching assistants in UK schools.

Enhancing classroom management

TAs also contribute to managing classroom behaviour. This enables teachers to focus on delivering lessons. With the growing integration of technology in classrooms, TAs help with digital learning, ensuring that pupils use tools productively.

Adaptability

During the COVID-19 pandemic, TAs played an invaluable role. They supported schools by covering absences, supporting pupils of key workers when schools were partially open, forming bridges between parents and schools, and following up on home learners.

Reducing teacher workload

Teaching assistants ease teachers' workload and help reduce stress. They assist with setting up equipment and organising classroom resources. They work with teachers, to manage classroom behaviour, and support with reading, writing, and numeracy activities. This extra support enhances educational outcomes. It enables teachers to focus on lesson planning and teaching.

National Teaching Assistants’ Day

The 2024 Teaching Assistant of the Year nominations are in! Voting is closed, but schools can still show appreciation for their TA by writing a thank-you message. Let’s celebrate their incredible contributions.

On September 27th, we will celebrate the tireless efforts of TAs, with eight outstanding teaching assistants being recognised for their exceptional work. They will be presented with a special certificate, a trophy, and a gift voucher.

Enhancing education with TAs

TAs are a cornerstone of successful schools. TAs contribute to classroom management, personalised learning, and pupil wellbeing. By providing academic, emotional, and behavioural support, TAs help schools thrive. Their role in assisting diverse learners, managing classroom dynamics, and creating a positive school atmosphere ensures pupils can reach their full potential. And teachers can focus on delivering high-quality education.

TAs are in high demand, and many schools can’t cope without them. With their invaluable contribution to the educational community, TAs are the unsung heroes in schools. Their dedication transforms classrooms and makes a lasting impact on the lives of countless pupils and teachers.
