Year 2 Teacher – Temporary (Burgess Hill, West Sussex)
Reports to: Headteacher
Key Stage: KS1 (Year 2)
Overview
The Year 2 Teacher will deliver high-quality, engaging, and nurturing education to children aged 6-7 years in accordance with the National Curriculum and the school’s values. The role demands planning and delivering stimulating lessons that build skills in reading, writing, maths, phonics, and creative subjects, fostering a love of learning and supporting the developmental needs of each pupil.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver comprehensive lessons covering all KS1 subjects, following curriculum objectives and year 2 expectations.
- Use varied teaching strategies, including hands-on activities, games, and visual aids to maintain active engagement suited to 6–7-year-olds.
- Provide targeted one-to-one or small group support for pupils needing extra help to reach key developmental milestones.
- Create a positive classroom atmosphere that supports social, emotional, and academic growth.
- Regularly assess, mark, and monitor pupil progress; use assessment data to inform tailored interventions and report to parents.
- Communicate effectively with parents via newsletters, meetings, and reports to keep them engaged in their child’s learning and wellbeing.
- Implement and uphold school policies on behaviour management, safeguarding, and inclusion.
- Collaborate with staff, leadership, and support services to meet the needs of all pupils, including able, gifted, talented, and those with special educational needs.
- Fulfil pastoral duties for the class and coordinate well with teaching assistants and support staff.
- Encourage pupil participation in extracurricular activities and school-wide events relevant to Year 2 pupils.
Person Specification – Essential
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Experience teaching KS1, with a strong preference for Year 2 experience
- Deep understanding of child development for 6–7-year-olds and National Curriculum requirements
- Ability to deliver differentiated lessons that cater to a wide range of learning abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with pupils, parents, and colleagues
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare
- Enthusiasm for developing foundational skills in reading, phonics, writing, and maths
- Strong organisational skills and positive classroom management
