Job description

Position: Sports Coach
Location: Southport
Contract: Full-Time

A well-established Alternative Provision setting in Southport is seeking a passionate and experienced Sports Coach to join their dedicated team. This is a full-time opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting young people who have not thrived in mainstream education.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering engaging and inclusive sports sessions that promote physical wellbeing, teamwork, and confidence. The ideal person will have previous experience coaching children or working in similar educational or youth support settings, particularly with learners who present with social, emotional, or behavioural challenges.

About the Setting:

The school provides a diverse and vocationally rich learning environment, with facilities including a large workshop, salon, and general teaching rooms equipped with whiteboards for core subjects such as Maths and English.

Learners benefit from a nurturing atmosphere, personalised support, and additional enrichment, including freshly prepared food from a mobile food van that visits daily. Last year, 98% of learners achieved qualifications, and 80% progressed into Further Education, highlighting the positive outcomes of the setting’s holistic approach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging sports and physical activity sessions tailored to individual and group needs.

  • Encourage positive behaviour, teamwork, and personal development through sport.

  • Support the wider school team in promoting student engagement, attendance, and wellbeing.

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with learners to help break down barriers to participation.

  • Contribute to the broader life of the provision, including enrichment activities and behaviour support when needed.

Essential Requirements:

  • Previous experience coaching children or young people, ideally in an education or youth work setting.

  • Ability to manage behaviour effectively and engage hard-to-reach learners.

  • A passion for sport, physical activity, and helping young people succeed.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • A flexible, resilient, and proactive approach to working with young people with additional needs or challenging backgrounds.

This is an excellent opportunity for a committed Sports Coach to be part of a supportive team that’s making a real difference in young people’s lives.
