SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Chorley, Lancashire
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm
Pay: £13.75 – £14.50 per hour
Start Date: ASAP

We are currently seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive Alternative Provision in Chorley. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of pupils aged 11-16 who have struggled to thrive in mainstream education due to social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.

About the Role:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups to support their learning, emotional development, and behavioural progress. You will be part of a nurturing team focused on creating a safe, consistent, and supportive environment that encourages positive outcomes for each student.

Your role will involve:

  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs both in and out of the classroom

  • Implementing tailored behaviour management strategies

  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students

  • Supporting teaching staff in delivering lessons and interventions

  • Assisting with personal development plans and emotional regulation techniques

  • Promoting engagement, attendance, and positive behaviour

Key Attributes:

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Calm, patient, and resilient under pressure

  • Able to build rapport and establish strong boundaries with young people

  • Empathetic and understanding of the challenges faced by pupils with SEMH needs

  • Experienced in a similar setting or with relevant transferable skills (experience in youth work, care, or special education is highly desirable)

  • A strong communicator and team player with a proactive approach

This role requires consistency, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting young people who may have experienced trauma, exclusion, or disruption in their education.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
