Teaching Personnel is seeking a committed and compassionate Pastoral Support Assistant to join a specialist provision in the Bolton area this September on a full-time basis. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people both emotionally and academically.


About the Role

You will be working with pupils aged 11–16 within an alternative provision setting, supporting students who may have:

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Behavioural challenges
  • Barriers to learning linked to additional needs or past experiences

The school provides a structured, nurturing, and inclusive environment where strong relationships, consistency, and effective behaviour management are at the heart of everything they do. The focus is on re-engaging students with education and supporting their personal development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide pastoral care and emotional support to students on a 1:1 and small group basis
  • Promote positive behaviour and implement consistent behaviour management strategies
  • Support students in managing emotions, building resilience, and developing social skills
  • Work closely with teaching staff to support engagement in learning
  • Monitor attendance, wellbeing, and progress, reporting any concerns
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students to encourage positive outcomes
  • Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies where required

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH or behavioural needs
  • Strong and confident behaviour management skills (essential)
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach to challenging situations
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain professional boundaries
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Passion for supporting vulnerable young people and making a difference
