Youth Worker (Teaching Assistant – SEMH Provision)

Location: Failsworth
Start Date: ASAP

Teaching Personnel is seeking a confident, proactive, and resilient individual to work as a Youth Worker within a specialist SEMH provision in Failsworth.

The role is based within a school setting, with a strong focus on behaviour support, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals from youth work, sports coaching, or mentoring backgrounds who are looking to transition into education.

The Role

You will work closely with teaching staff to support pupils both inside and outside of the classroom, helping them access learning and manage their behaviour positively.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Assisting with classroom activities and adapting tasks to suit individual needs
  • Supporting lesson delivery alongside the class teacher
  • Using proactive behaviour management strategies to maintain engagement
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and de-escalation
  • Promoting positive behaviour and social interaction
  • Building strong, professional relationships while maintaining clear boundaries
  • Creating a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
  • Monitoring progress and contributing to individual support plans

About the Provision

This specialist SEMH setting supports pupils who may have:

  • Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Behavioural challenges
  • Difficulties accessing mainstream education

The provision follows a trauma-informed approach, focusing on consistency, structure, and relationship-building to help pupils achieve positive outcomes.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience in youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, or behaviour support with young people
  • A confident, resilient, and proactive approach
  • Strong communication and behaviour management skills
  • Ability to remain calm in challenging situations
  • Passion for supporting vulnerable young people

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or within an SEMH setting
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to complete training through Teaching Personnel)
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice and SEMH needs
