SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Basingstoke
Salary: £14.25 per hour
Job Type: Full-time, Term-time
Working Hours: Monday–Friday

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist education setting supporting children aged 4–11 years with a range of special educational needs.

The school supports pupils with needs including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), learning difficulties, communication needs, and speech and language difficulties.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is passionate about supporting children and helping them develop academically, socially and personally.

We welcome applications from candidates with experience in education, childcare, health and social care, youth work, support work, healthcare, coaching or other relevant settings. Previous experience working in an SEN environment is desirable but not essential, as relevant transferable skills will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with teachers and the wider support team, you will play an important role in supporting pupils to engage with learning and achieve their individual goals.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support

  • Supporting pupils to access the curriculum and classroom activities

  • Assisting with individual learning and communication needs

  • Encouraging confidence, independence and positive social development

  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils

  • Creating a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment

  • Supporting pupils during transitions, breaktimes and activities

  • Working collaboratively with teachers and other support staff

Person Specification

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • Patience, empathy and understanding

  • A genuine commitment to supporting children with additional needs

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • A calm, positive and professional approach

  • Flexibility and adaptability

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • A willingness to learn and develop within an SEN environment

Experience working with children aged 4–11 or pupils with additional needs is advantageous. Experience gained through care, childcare, education, youth work, healthcare, coaching or support work will also be considered.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
