As the leading education recruitment agency, teaching personnel service a high proportion of the secondary schools in the Portsmouth and surrounding areas who have an increasing need for graduates who can work with them as a Cover Supervisor in the absence of their usual teaching and cover staff.  As a Cover Supervisor you will be responsible for supervising pupils carrying out pre prepared exercises and to manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task in a timely and well managed manner. The role of a Cover Supervisor is a rewarding yet challenging role which can offer valuable experience to prospectus future teachers or can offer a step up in career for an experienced teaching assistant.

Key duties will include:

  • Delivering and supervising work that has been set by usual teaching staff
  • Answering questions students have to the best of your ability
  • Ensure pupils are on task and engaged in their learning
  • Reporting back using the schools policies of behaviour during lessons to the most appropriate persons
  • Dealing efficiently with any problems or emergencies that may arise
  • Keeping up to date with new educational policy and legislation as well as being productive with your continual professional development

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a graduate with the desire to work in education
  • Be an excellent role model for students to learn from
  • Have a good understanding of how children learn and think and be able to implement learning strategies to ensure that every lesson is a productive one
  • Have patience, resilience and demonstrate that they can build solid professional relationships with students and staff alike
  • Have a commitment to safeguarding every pupil and be able to break down barriers to learning
  • Be an effective communicator at various levels from dealing with students and staff to parents and on occasion external agencies
  • Have GCSE minimum grade C or equivalent functional skills in English and Maths
  • Be passionate about improving educational outcomes for all students

Opportunities available

We currently work with a large number of schools who request adhoc Cover Supervisors when they have a high level of absence in their usual staff. This could be ideal for a graduate who is continuing to study part time or has an alternate part time commitment to allow you to top up your earnings whilst gaining valuable teaching experience. We can work to your flexibility by utilising our online diary system so you are easily able to keep us informed of your availability.

If you are looking for a more permanent solution we can look to place you in a full time position in one school. A permanent Graduate Cover Supervisor will be allocated a cover timetable in which teachers can be relieved to complete essential planning and preparation work, attend vital training/meetings and to relieve pressure in the absence of its usual teaching staff. You will be integrated into the support staff team alongside other Cover Supervisors and be part of the school community to safeguard, nurture and guide students through their secondary education. Many of our school have partnerships with education and learning FE centres who could look to put you through your teacher training in the future through a School Centred Initial Teacher Training programme (SCITT).
